Music

We have a wide variety of music groups operating at South New Brighton School.  From choirs to ukulele groups, from rock bands to kapa haka, there is a style of music here to suit everyone.  We also have students learning instruments such as the violin and the guitar at school.

Violin Group

Our wonderful violin group is made up of students who range in age from 6 to 13!  They have all only started learning in term 2 this year but are making wonderful progress.  They expect to have their first performance at assembly in week 5.  They have their lesson before school on Tuesday mornings.

Violin Assembly Performance

The violin groups very first performance in assembly on June 2 2011.

Guitar Group

Mrs MacKenzie takes her guitar group after school on Wednesdays for any students who wish to learn and are committed to practice.  Some of these students have been learning quite awhile and some are just beginners, but they are all included, learn quickly and have fun.

Classroom Music and the Wave Rider Interchange

Music is taught at all levels of the school as part of the classroom programme.  In the senior Wave Rider team, students have a six week performance music block where they all learn to perform a song of their choice as a group.  This also involves making a music video as part of their performance.

Rock Band

This year we have started up a rock band for the senior students.  We have a wide variety of talent in this group; a fantastic drummer, a very talented electric ukulele player as well as some equally talented back-up acoustic ukulele players, some guitarists, our great bass player, unusually a very cool xylophone player, and some awesome vocalists.  The aim of the rock band is to eventually provide accompaniment for assembly singing - lets see!

Bass Guitar

We have been lucky enough this term to have Peter join us as a teacher aide in room 8.  He is also a bass player in the popular Christchurch rock group The Valves and he is now teaching two of our Wave Rider students to play the bass guitar.  This is a great experience for them and we really appreciate him sharing his expertise!

The Ukulele Orchestra

These are the comedians of the school music programme!  They are very influenced by the performances of the Wellington ukulele orchestra and are currently working on Tuesday lunchtimes on a few quirky pieces.  They have recently performed at the Christchurch Ukulele festival.  Our senior ukulele players also played alongside the Chisnallwood Intermediate ukulele group at the New Zealander of the Year awards which was very exciting.
